Virginia is for llama lovers! Many of the best llama breeders in the country are located in Virginia, as well as nationally known llama veterinarians Dr. Karen Baum and Dr. Donna Matthews-Brown and their llamas. From its Blue Ridge mountains to its beaches and rich history, there is no doubt that Virginia is a great state to raise llamas while also enjoying everything the state has to offer.

Virginia is home to some great llamas, some known nationally, and llama shows in this state are known for their competitiveness but in a friendly way. Highlights of llama events in Virginia includeThe Virginia Classic, The Old Dominion Gold Cup, and the Shenandoah Showcase of Stars. Virginia llama breeders are well represented at national show and events throughout the year, as evidence that llama enthusiasm is alive and well in Virginia. Below are the farms in Virginia that we highly recommend, along with their descriptions and a link to their website (if they have one).

Burnt Mountain Llamas is owned by Jim and Jennifer (and baby Arianna) White and is located in central Virginia. They were established in 2000 with the purchase of their first llamas. Originally interested in establishing a llama trekking business, Jim and Jennifer later became interested in showing and breeding llamas and decided to go in that direction instead of llama treks. Since then the Whites have been selectively breeding and adding to their herd while selling llamas along the way. Their breeding program is centered around their renowned herdsire, Merit, who needs no introduction. You can read more about Merit's history on the Burnt Mountain Llamas website. He truly is the cornerstone of the Burnt Mountain breeding program. In addition, Argentine and suri llamas have been added to diversify the types of llamas bred, shown, and offered for sale.

CastleRock Farm was established in 1994 when we purchased our first four llamas from Eckerson Bolivian Llamas in Oregon. Since that time, our herd has grown to over 30 llamas. The vision that we had when we first became interested in llamas has become our reality today. We have a select herd of sound, healthy, award-winning llamas with beautiful fleeces that feature bloodlines from Peru, Bolivia, Chile and North America.   We are celebrating 12 years with llamas in 2006 and, given our experience in the industry, have much to offer prospective owners as well as experienced breeders.
We continually strive to improve our herd and, as a result, expanded our breeding program several years ago to focus on raising suri llamas.  We were awestruck with the graceful beauty of the suri llama, and so the adventure began with the purchase of Peruvian Secret Weapon, in partnership with Graceful Legend Llamas. Secret Weapon has had a significant impact on our herd, with his offspring doing consistently well in both the ALSA and futurity show rings.  His kids have earned multiple championships and have earned the titles of “high sellers” in many of the national llama sales.  Additionally, Peruvian Secret Weapon is the FIRST SURI MALE to have earned an ALSA Get of Sire Championship!

Graustark Farm LLC is dedicated to producing friendly, well-trained llamas with correct conformation and silky fiber. Our small llama herd comes from a foundation of nationally known bloodlines and we have found that personality is just as important in selective breeding as conformation and fiber! We have chosen our herd accordingly and raise and sell animals suitable for breeding, competition, and companionship. When new owners are unfamiliar with llamas, we work with them until they become comfortable caring for their livestock. We also offer boarding and specialized care for “at risk” crias. Graustark supports the Loudoun Llama Lovers 4H club and many of our animals are worked with by young people. We are located in northern Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and visitors are welcome by appointment. We love to share our llama joys and blessings!
