We are Brad & Sylvia De Waard. Our 16 ½ acre farm (which recently grew to 34 acres!) is located 16 miles west of Spokane, Washington. We are nestled along the edge of ponderosa pines and Palouse wheat country.

Our life with llamas began quite innocently in December 1994. We were searching for something different in terms of livestock or pets, yet we had no idea what it might be. On our first llama farm visit, we were completely enamored and simply taken upon seeing and being near these creatures, so wonderfully elegant, intelligent, curious, regal. That was our initiation in the middle of winter 1994. It was a strange winter indeed. One really can’t forget fencing projects in 20 degree weather! By the next Christmas, there were 12 llamas on the farm. We were falling deeply in love with the magic and mystery of a life with llamas. As with many ventures, there’s the learning curve. We learned a lot of lessons, many the hard way and many of the lessons were very costly; financially and mentally. But, we were learning and meeting a lot of new and wonderful friends and acquaintances.

Through it all we found a significant common denominator that we both really enjoyed seeing on llamas. That feature was beautiful fiber, a single-coated fleece without guard hair on structurally correct llamas. This desire for beautiful fiber began early on. We hadn’t seen it often, but fine, single-fleeced, lustrous fiber always caught our eye. As a result, we have invested in proven bloodlines ranging from full North American to exotic South American. We’ve watched and studied the llama industry carefully all the while. Surprisingly enough, this has been the direction of the industry over the past several years. Accordingly, we were able to purchase Chile Bronsky 1033 to enhance our fiber goals. Plus, we retained a young male, Dutch Flats B. B. King who has the most incredible fiber! His first cria is due this August. And, with the interest in the suri llama type, we now have two outstanding herdsires; FW Bolivian El Anclote and Chilean Achilles. We are excited about Anclotes’ get and have high hopes for Achilles first breeding season next spring. We believe we have the beginnings of something wonderful.
